You and your family are in for such a treat! We'll use this Black Friday to #OptOutside and to delight in monarch 🦋🦋🦋 butterflies wrapping up their annual migration and hunkering down for the winter. We'll do a short hike to see the monarchs, followed by beach play and some tidepooling! We'll meet in the afternoon since that's when the butterflies wake up! If you have trouble making 2 p.m. and want to join later, you can! It will be easy to find us.

WHAT TO EXPECT for 11/27, BLACK FRIDAY ADVENTURE



🦋 MONARCH BUTTERFLIES: We'll visit a grove where migrating monarch butterflies have nestled up for the winter! Miranda will bring her kid-friendly telescope 🔭 so all of the littles can get a peek! We'll also scan the trees for some resident owls 🦉🦉🦉

🦀🐚 TIDEPOOLING MAGIC + BEACH PLAY: We'll scout for hermit crabs, sea urchins, sea anemones, blue mussels and as many seastars as we can count!! Families can also hang out on the beach 🏖️ while kids build sandcastles 🏰🏰🏰 and dams! 

🍕🍦 DINNER: Since we're meeting in the afternoon, we'll try to organize a simple meal for the group. We’ll order cheese pizza; participants need to sign up and pay for pizza in advance. Whoever is interested can join us for ice cream after beach play!!

🌇🌊 STUNNING VIEWS + SUNSET: We'll take in some stunning views and a wonderful sunset so definitely bring your nice camera 📸📸📸

🔍 SCAVENGER HUNT: Embark on a fun scavenger hunt around these very special tidepools + forest!!!

DIFFICULTY: About 1-mile EASY hike. There are some stairs so it's best to bring a front- or backpack carrier

  • EASY, short hike. Strollers can be used but there are staircases in a few places so backpack/front-facing carriers are recommended. For beach, easy short walk.

  • Friday, 2 PM: Meet in the parking lot and hike to monarch grove. View monarchs; Miranda bringing kids’ telescope to help with viewing. Afterward, head over to a nearby beach to explore tiny tidepools and a cave; fun in the sun for the kids, R&R for the parents! We’ll order cheese pizza; participants need to sign up and pay for pizza in advance.

  • To get an idea of drive time (this is not the actual meeting point; that’s given after sign-up + payment is completed). It's about 15 minutes from here: map to the general area

  • ONE TIME DROP-IN for this adventure only

    • FAS fee, early bird until Sunday, Nov. 15, 10 p.m.: $64/family for a single-income family; $74/family for a dual-income family (up to 2 kids)

    • Regular rate after Nov. 15: $74/family for a single-income family; $84/family for a dual-income family (up to 2 kids)

    • One pass covers a family, meaning parents and children

    • After 2 kids, $10 for each additional child to cover treats + educational materials. Choose your household, number of kids and rate when you book: the price shown includes it.

    • Outings are not refundable. A one-time credit transfer to another outing — to be used within three months — is possible; the credit expires within three months, please DM Miranda.

    • Full payment must be made to secure your spot (we don't take cash; only digital payment — see options in "how to book" section above).

  • I have gear for kids and adults that you can borrow for this trip: jogging strollers, baby and toddler carriers, sleeping bags, air pads, wetsuits and more. Borrow it from Gear loans: $10 an item, for its upkeep between loans. Choose this trip when you add an item to your cart. Your guide brings it on the day; if there is no room in their car, you may need to pick it up from them before the trip.

  • EVERY 10TH: For every 10th family who signs up for this outing, we can welcome a family for free. This is geared toward low income families. We don't check income; this is an honor system.
